And so it is, Ultra Violet, the Pantone Colour for 2018!!

“I wouldn’t have picked it, but I love it”, so says Roisin Lafferty in a recent interview in the Weekend Magazine in the Irish Independent.  “It’s opulent, luxurious - and quite dramatic”, she feels. And well, she should know, after all she is one of the country’s leading interior designers and an expert in her field.  Roisin is founder and creative director with Kingston Lafferty Designs and an ambassador for Fleetwood Paints.

Of course we are talking about ‘Ultra Violet, the shocking purple shade that International Colour Institute, Pantone, has announced as its Color of the Year for 2018.  And yes it is shocking and really bold but given half a chance it can add drama to any home.  Purple has long been heralded the color of kings and royalty so perhaps it’s time to open a new chapter for 2018 on how we all view color.  Perhaps we need to be a little more open to all changes that are presenting themselves to us and welcome some new ideas into our home.

“You have to be dramatic with it”, Roisin admits.  She states that it is complex and contemplative. “Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now”.  She advises to choose very carefully the room in which this colour should be used and perhaps to steer away from feature walls.

Paint continues to be a dominant trend in the home decor market and Roisin describes it as “the most transformative tool in interiors”.
We have to agree with this idea as paint is such a versatile method of completely changing the look of a room or your home in its entirety with the simple stroke of a brush.  There are literally thousands of colours to choose from so maybe we should all resolve to be more dramatic for 2018!
Pantone says that historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection.

About the Pantone Color of the Year

“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today”. - Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Color Institute.
As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use color to inspire and influence.  The Color of the Year is one moment in time that proves strategic direction for the world of trend and design, reflecting the Pantone Color Institute’s year-round work doing the same for designers and brands.
